In Ontario, an adoption results in an individual taking on all parental responsibilities for an adopted child. Types of Adoption
Step-Parent Adoption
Adopt your step-child by applying directly to a court for an adoption order. We assist with step-parent adoptions in Ontario.
Adult Adoptions

International Adoption*
Adopt a child who resides outside of Canada. Fresh Legal can assist with contacting an intercountry adoption licensee to assist with facilitating a successful adoption.
Private Adoption*
Adopt a child who was placed for adoption by a Licensee or through a private adoption agency.
Public Adoption*
Adopt a child who was placed in permanent care of a Children’s Aid Society (also known as “Extended Society Care” and formerly known as “Crown Wardship”). Fresh Legal has extensive experience dealing with Children’s Aid Societies, including through the adoption process.

What is openness?
Openness is the legal right of a birth parent to have contact with the birth child. Once a child is placed for adoption, the birth family can apply to the court for an openness order. Fresh Legal can assist at all stages of the openness process including negotiation, mediation and litigation if necessary.
